This surface is interpolated between wells. It shows values that were never directly measured, and fades where no well is nearby. Negative values (red) mean the water table dropped since the baseline date, drawdown, the same sign convention USGS uses on its own water-level-change maps.

How this surface is computed, and its limits

The interpolation is ordinary kriging, draped against real ground elevation. Kriging is a linear estimator fit to this well network's own spatial variogram, how similarly nearby wells actually read, estimated from the real data rather than assumed. It is not a black-box model. Cells fade out the farther they are from an actual well, using a ~6mi distance radius: kriging's own estimation variance is real and reported per cell, but for this well network it's dominated by noise between nearby wells rather than distance, so it doesn't fade smoothly the way a simple distance radius does. Low-opacity areas are mostly extrapolation, not signal, either way. Cell size adapts to zoom: zooming into a facility interpolates a finer local mesh rather than showing the same statewide grid up close. This model also assumes the water table's spatial behavior is broadly consistent across the state (kriging's stationarity assumption) and that it tracks ground-surface topography, simplifications that hold better in shallow, well-connected aquifers than in deep or recharge-controlled ones.
